INDIA, Post-Mauryan (Panchala). Panchalas of Adhichhatra. Agnimitra, circa 1-70. 1/2 Karshapana (Bronze, 16 mm, 4.72 g). Deity with flaming hair standing facing on ritual platform flanked by two standards. Rev. AGNIMATASA (in Brahmi) with three Panchala dynastic symbols above. Pieper 1021. Minor corrosion, otherwise, very fine.

The Panchala Kingdom rose in northern India amidst the collapse of the Mauryan Empire. It was among the first indigenous realms of India to strike coins bearing the ruler's name on the reverse, whereas the obverse is usually related to the king's name by showing his eponymous deity.
